AI is not just about automation and data crunching; it's about empowering businesses to make informed decisions.
AI is not just about automation and data crunching; it's about empowering businesses to make informed decisions
While I’m not a full-time analyst, I’ve spent the past few months exploring how AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini are reshaping what’s possible in AI data workflows—especially with everyday tools like Excel and Power BI.
This week’s edition is a straight-shooting guide for leaders:
No jargon. No hype. Just real examples of how these tools are showing up in modern AI data workflows—and what you should watch out for.
Let’s keep it simple: ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Google Gemini are AI models trained to understand and generate human language.
They’re part of a broader class called Large Language Models (LLMs)—think of them as ultra-fast assistants that can write, explain, and even code based on your prompts.
And they’re everywhere. ChatGPT hit a million users in five days. Gemini is tightly integrated with Google tools. Both are free to use with optional pro tiers.
Here’s how analysts and data pros are already using these tools in their AI data workflows:
✅ Write Excel formulas or SQL queries from plain-English prompts
✅ Generate VBA or M code to automate reports and formatting
✅ Explain complex formulas in simple terms—for teammates or self-training
✅ Build industry-specific sample datasets, including dirty data for practice
✅ Recommend chart types based on your data’s shape and story
✅ Guide data cleaning and exploration with step-by-step advice
In short: they’re like having an always-on junior analyst who works in real time and never sleeps.
They’re helpful—but far from perfect:
⚠️ They hallucinate. Sometimes confidently. Always verify before trusting outputs.
⚠️ They don’t know your goals. Without context, results may look right—but miss the point.
⚠️ They offer good-enough answers. But they rarely think creatively or strategically.
⚠️ They lack judgment. Humans still bring the “why” and the business context.
Think of them as assistants—not decision-makers—in your AI data workflows.
The best analysts won’t be replaced by AI—but they will be outpaced by peers who learn how to use it.
AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini free your team from grunt work so they can focus on higher-value thinking:
Storytelling. Insight synthesis. Business alignment.
If you're leading a data-driven team, the opportunity isn’t automation—it’s amplification.
Ask ChatGPT:
“I’m analyzing customer churn in Excel. What 3 data points should I focus on first—and how can I visualize them?”
You’ll be surprised by the ideas that come back—even if you don’t use them all.
Is your team already using AI in their data workflows?
What’s one reporting task you’d love to simplify?
What’s holding you back from experimenting?
